Did an interview with the lovely folks at the Journal & Courier. Here's what they came away with:
Mattern, A.K.A. "Atarilogic," is a 36-year-old media designer and hip-hop producer. His simplistic style has been primarily influenced by Ad-Rock from the Beastie Boys.
"I didn't play a lot of basketball or play a lot of sports, but I listened to a lot of music, and I used to draw. I like comic books and that sort of stuff. So when Beastie Boys came out and (I heard) the soundtrack to 'Miami Vice' with Melle Mel it kind of translated into this real raucous fashion sense with blue jeans, Adidas, some kind of fun shirt and a jacket. Then punk rock was a natural extension of that for me because it was loud music and it was fun and it was stuff your parents didn't want you to listen to. So it kind of translated into that.
"Over the years, I listened to all kinds of music. But at the end of the day, hip-hop and punk rock were the things I came back to. So I held onto that DIY ethic -- the fun comic book aspect of things, bright, colorful but very simple.
"I think it's been refined to a real specific look nowadays like kids wear tight jeans, leather jackets, chains, colorful kicks (shoes) ...
"(For me) it's real basic, jeans, a white T, a cap and a leather jacket and some good shoes. A lot of it has to do with the shoes. They just gotta be fresh.
We went through that gangsta phase, but that wasn't me; I just reflect on the fun aspects of hip-hop -- the boastfulness, the flashiness, the colors, show biz."
